Ice Cave Tours

Join us for a unique experience!

Ice caves are pure magic. Originally formed by meltwater and constantly changing through the same forces that will ultimately destroy them, they allow us to look inside the mighty glaciers of Iceland. The interplay of thawing and freezing creates spectacular structures of all sizes, from the caves themselves to tiny details that never cease to amaze!

An infinite variety of views and forms await, ready to be explored by photographers and casual visitors alike.

Let us guide you into this wonderland! We offer both half-day excursions and full day tours for those who just can’t get enough.

Please refer to our Questions and Answers on Ice Caves for important information on seasonal availability, clothing, and more.

We are fully booked.

We would have loved to guide you, but unfortunately we do not have a single day available for the remainder of the ice cave season. If you would like to be put on a waiting list for a certain date, please contact us via email.

Private Ice Cave Experience

The perfect tour for smaller time budgets

This tour is the perfect way to experience a natural ice cave if you have a more limited budget and time constraints that do not accommodate a longer expedition. Meet your private guide at Jökulsárlón and enjoy the half-hour superjeep drive over a landscape that may very well be the Moon. On this tour we will be able to drive very close to the ice cave, so that there is only a short and easy walk from the vehicle to the cave. Perfectly doable for people of all ages and abilities!

Inside the cave, your guide will explain the fascinating mechanisms behind glaciers, ice caves, and the wonderful colors we see. He will of course also assist you in taking any number of memorable photos!

If you feel like venturing a bit higher onto the ice, your guide will also take you on a short walk higher up onto the glacier, where more points of interest await. Or, you can choose to spend all available time inside the cave.

Total duration approximately 2.5 hours.

Difficulty Level 1

Very easy. Some walking, mostly flat, over rock, gravel and – especially inside the ice cave – snow/ice. Suitable for all ages and abilities.

Private Ice Cave Tour

A half-day adventure to more remote locations

We meet at the café at Jökulsárlón or other location of your choice, at your preferred time, and drive our Superjeep over rough terrain to the trail head. For our half-day tours we prefer to keep the access hike relatively short, but typically we will have a 10-20 minute hike through the breathtaking environment along the glacier before we arrive at the mouth of the ice cave itself. After a short safety briefing, we will venture inside and have ample time to explore the cave, learn more about the processes behind glaciers, and of course to take pictures.

Total duration approximately 4 hours.

Pickup at your accommodation can be arranged free of charge!

Difficulty Level 1-2

Moderately easy. Some walking, mostly flat, over rock, gravel and – especially inside the ice cave – snow/ice. Brief passages over easy glaciated terrain.

Private Full-Day Ice Cave Extravaganza

A full day of ice caving goodness

Embark on a day trip visiting ice caves without any pressure for time! You decide if we just spend the entire day in one cave, or if we split the time between multiple locations. From our experience, the relatively short winter days make it near impossible to visit more than two caves – especially since you’ll want to spend quite a bit of time in each.

We will meet you at a pickup location of your choice, and take our superjeep over rugged terrain to the trail head. On a full day tour we will have sufficient time to venture out to more remote places, add on a few detours to scenic locations that we pass on the way, or perhaps test ourselves at ice climbing while we’re on the glacier. Flexibility is king!

Total duration approximately 6-8 hours, depending on day length.

Difficulty Level 3

This will be a long day. Access conditions and length depends on which caves we choose to visit, but being out and about for a long day requires good fitness and suitable clothing.
